Reader Meter's Origin Story

Hello Storytelling Heroes! 👋My name is Michael Evans. At age 15, I started writing and self-publishing science fiction novels.After writing and marketing my books for years, I managed to publish 12 novels, but I never was able to get a read-through rate (aka people reading book 1 then book 2 in a series) that was high enough to be commercially successful.I found myself spending $1k a month on ads just to make $1k a month back.It was exhausting. Working endless hours to barely break even, meanwhile, all I wanted to do was have the freedom to write the stories I loved.The entire time, I blamed myself for being a bad writer. My stories weren't good enough. And I feared they never would be.My weird, adventurous life then took me to Harvard where I spent four years surrounded by incredible engineers and start-up founders.I got obsessed with bringing Power to Storytellers and made it my life mission to serve creators in the author community by bringing publishing science fiction to reality.Fast forward a few more years and I had co-founded a successful publishing platform for authors while also meeting thousands of authors in the community.Over and over again I kept running into the same problem with others that I faced myself.An author had a few books out, or was preparing to release their first book, but didn't have any real traction on their books and they didn't know why.They had spent money on ads. Did the newsletter swaps. The free book promotions.Everything. And yet nothing was working.Major life changes brought me to the world of YouTube, where I had previously created content my freshman year of college.I soon found myself working on the data and analytics team for the largest creator in the world, MrBeast.It is there that I learned the "formula" that MrBeast uses to reach hundreds of millions of viewers with every video.It's so simple, I almost didn't believe it.He has a relentless focus on learning what viewers want and creating videos that engage them.But the trick is this...MrBeast has access to data through YouTube Studio that allows him to see precisely when viewers stop watching, what thumbnails they are most likely to click on, and more.Everything is optimized.And unlike in the publishing world, where authors release books less often...In the early days, MrBeast was publishing new videos weekly and sometimes even more. Each time getting more data that he then used to improve his videos and reach more viewers.The flywheel never stopped, now reaching billions of views each month.That's when it all hit me.As authors we don't even have access to the data we need to optimize our stories.No wonder I was sitting there lost and defeated at 18 years old. No wonder I threw thousands of dollars away, praying that the right marketing campaign would change everything.In reality, I needed something different.I needed to understand my readers better, so that I could write better stories for them.I needed to put my Readers First, by knowing which chapters and even down to individual pages were most and least interesting to them.I'm creating Reader Meter for me. For the younger version of me that would have saved so much anguish and hardship if he had these insights.And for the present day version of me that so badly wants to not only use Reader Meter for myself but give it to the hundreds of authors I am lucky enough to call my friends.If software can be a love letter, then this is my love letter to the writing community.Reader Meter is on a mission to bring ultra-powerful reader intelligence to every author on the planet.
